The Importance of Progressive Overload in Achieving Results at ACTV

By Anthony Bartolo
I don’t know anyone who comes to ACTV who is not looking to improve their fitness level or make significant changes to their body composition. So, you should have heard the term "progressive overload." But what does it mean, and why is it such an important principle when it comes to achieving results at ACTV? In essence, progressive overload simply means gradually increasing the amount of stress you place on your body during a workout. This can come in many forms, such as lifting heavier weights, performing more reps or sets, shortening rest periods, or increasing the difficulty of a particular exercise. The idea is that by gradually challenging your body to work harder over time, you will continually make progress and see results. So why is this so important? Well, there are several reasons. For one thing, progressive overload helps to prevent plateaus. If you continue to do the same exercises with the same weight or intensity, your body will eventually adapt to the stimulus and stop making progress. By increasing the stress on your body over time, however, you force it to constantly adapt and improve. Progressive overload also helps to ensure that you're working at an appropriate level of intensity for your goals. If you're lifting the same weight for months on end, you may not be challenging yourself enough to see significant changes in your muscle size or strength. On the other hand, if you're constantly pushing yourself to lift heavier weights or do more reps, you may be risking injury or overtraining. Finding the right balance is key, and progressive overload can help you do that. Finally, progressive overload can help you achieve your goals more efficiently. If you're constantly challenging yourself, you'll likely see faster results than if you were to stick to the same routine for an extended period. This can be particularly important if you have a specific deadline for achieving your goals, such as a wedding or upcoming competition. At ACTV, we believe in the importance of progressive overload and incorporate this principle into our training program, you can expect to see gradual increases in the difficulty and intensity of your workouts over time. By challenging yourself to work harder and improve your fitness level gradually, you'll be amazed at the results you can achieve in a short period of time. In conclusion, progressive overload is a critical principle when it comes to achieving results at ACTV. By gradually increasing the stress on your body and challenging yourself to work harder over time, you can prevent plateaus, ensure you're working at an appropriate level of intensity, and achieve your goals more efficiently. If you're looking to make significant changes to your fitness level or body composition, incorporating progressive overload into your training program is a must. It is important to note that we do build in de-load days and weeks around this so we can keep you training on THE NEXT LEVEL!
