BENEFITS OF LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS AT LOW REPS

By Anthony Bartolo

The benefits of lifting heavy weights at low reps are numerous. Here are some reasons why this technique is so effective in our strength and conditioning program:

  1. Builds maximum strength: Lifting heavy weights at 3-5 reps is a proven way to build maximum strength. This is because it allows you to lift the most weight possible, challenging your muscles and nervous system to adapt and grow stronger.
  1. Improves neuromuscular coordination: Lifting heavy weights at low reps also improves neuromuscular coordination. This type of training requires precise and efficient movement patterns, which enhance your ability to recruit the appropriate muscles when lifting heavier loads.
  1. Increases power output: When you lift heavy weights at low reps, you are training your body to generate maximum force in a short amount of time. This translates to increased power output, which can be beneficial for athletes in explosive sports such as football, basketball, and track and field.
  1. Increases muscle fibre recruitment: Low-rep, heavy weightlifting targets fast-twitch muscle fibres, which have the greatest potential for growth and strength development. These fibres are responsible for explosive movements like jumping, sprinting, and throwing. By recruiting more of these fibres, you can increase your overall power and explosiveness.
  1. Increases bone density: Lifting heavy weights at low reps' places significant stress on your bones, which prompts them to increase in density and strength over time. This is particularly important for older adults, who are at a higher risk for osteoporosis and other bone-related conditions.
  1. Gives you the opportunity to get stronger and break through plateaus, so when you get back to higher reps you can lift heaver weights and continue to progress.

In summary, lifting heavy weights at 3-5 reps is a highly effective training technique for building maximum strength, improving neuromuscular coordination, increasing power output, enhancing muscle fibber recruitment, and boosting bone density. Building this strong base will help you lift heaver when we get back to our hypertrophy work in the following weeks. So, get some weight on the bar and enjoy the challenge of pushing yourself in a different way.
